Product Overview

Pedigree:  Since 1882 the venerable Gros family has made some of the most sought after wines in Burgundy. Today the family has 3 operations; Domaine Gros Frere & Soeur run by Vincent Gros and has father, Bernard; the Domaine's 8 Ha in the villages of Vosne-Romanee and Flagey-Echezeaux which include some top plots and rub shoulders with the giants of Burgundy; 12 Ha of Hautes Cotes de Nuits just north of Vosne, acquired by Bernard in 1984. The decision to replant most of the  Domaine's vines beginning in 1986 was an expensive investment in improved clones and vineyard layout. Today the sacrifice has paid off, the vines are reaching maturity and demonstrating their potential highlighting the Gros passion to produce wines that match the standards of their illustrious appellations.

Winemaking
Bernard and Vincent Gros have 9 Ha in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits Hameau of Concoeur-et-Corboin. These limestone and clay soils are just north of the venerable appellation of Vosne-Romanee which the Domaine calls its home. The decision to acquire land in this appellation in 1984 was prescient. Until quite recently the Hautes Cotes de Nuits was just that much cooler than the illustrious appellations to render the wines less ripe, less complete and less worthy and the prices obtained reflected this. With the march of global climate change HCN has come into its own, producing riper, sweeter, better balanced wines with one important difference - the prices have not caught up with the great strides in quality!

The Domaine practices lutte raisonee, thoughtful, sustainable practices in the vineyards. The wines undergo a light fining and are bottled unfiltered to preserve all the fruit characteristics. Essentially this HCN is made with the same care and attention as the famous Grand Crus. The wine sees 75% of new oak barrels, depending on the vintage.
Alcohol: 13.5%

Tasting Notes:
Color: Beautiful, limpid, dark cherry hues.
Nose: Hints of forest floor with spiciness, muted though complex floral notes, elegant and stimulating.
Palate: Restrained powerful entry with a lovely balance of sweet fruit, acid and tannin well integrated with the oak. The wine has lots of stuffing but retains its nuances, minerality and complexity to an harmonious finish. This wine really punches above its weight!
Serving Temperature: 65° F - 70° F

Food Pairing:
Pair with wild mushroom risotto or Matelote Bourguignonne, a Burgundian speciality that includes eels simmered in red burgundy.
